One thing that seldom works out for me is writing short stories. I love the format but can never figure out how and where to end the damn thing.
Author Lisa Cupolo is a master at short story endings.
Her debut collection “Have Mercy On Us” won the W.S. Porter Prize for short story collections.
When I read Lisa’s collection, one of her stories inspired a conclusion for a short story I was working on. When I saw that Lisa was judging a short story contest for the California Writers Club – Orange County Branch, I submitted that story, “Perspective.”
I’m happy to say that my story, along with one by fellow O.C. club member Kevin Corfield, was selected for the Anthology “Best of the Best: 2024 Literary Review California Writer’s Club” and is available now from Amazon.
“Perspective” is about a young woman who works the swing shift at the post office. It’s set in the 1970’s, pre-cell phones, caller ID, and voice mail.
Back in those days, we had to sit home by our telephones to answer a call, even calls that were more than a little terrifying.
The story is based on something that really happened to me, although the names and the specifics have been changed.
